Introduction
One notable tradition at OU happens in the very beginning of the year, when during convocation, each freshmen class marches into the College Green through the Class Gateway, ready to embrace their future. Jewish tradition is filled with imagery around gateways, notably we are commanded to make for a sign on our doorposts and gates. This ritual is accomplished through the placement of a Mezuzah, an ornamental case containing parchments of the Shema prayer, marking our homes and buildings as Jewish spaces. The root of the word “mezuzah” in Hebrew is “zuz” meaning “to move or shift.” As Ohio University Hillel embarks on the next stage, ready to embrace our future, we want to mark our space on campus and shift what it means to be a Jewish Bobcat.
